Book pet peeves

When it comes to reading, I am a pretty easy going person.  As long as it is reading, I don’t really have many issues.  I don’t have pre-judgments messy booksabout genre or format.  I’ve read series and stand-alone books.  I’ve helped people find books on vampires, werewolves, politics, physics, cooking, baseball, make up, and bugs.  I’ve seen it all, read a lot of it, and not much bothers me.

That easy breezy attitude does not extend to books.  It may sound silly but I was really surprised to find out certain things bothered me.  I was standing on the platform waiting for my train when I saw a man who had a paperback book.  He had broken the spine so that the front and back covers of the book touched; making it so he could read it with one hand.  Have you ever wanted to pet a book and apologize to it?  I hadn’t until that moment.

Telling the story to a co-worker of mine, I was informed that I “fix” her books.  Often I will come by her desk and will see a book open and face down to keep her place.  I always reach over and slide a bookmark or post it note between the pages and close up the book.  I can’t help myself.

It made me wonder what bothers certain people about their books.  So I ask you, dear OOM-iverse…What is your book pet peeve?  Is it ebooks? Book spine abuse?  Other people putting bookmarks in your place and closing your book?  Audiobooks?  Books with purple covers?  Missing dust jackets?  Tell us in the comments!

  1. Ebooks! I love the feel of physicaly holding the book I am reading and the touch of the pages between my fingers. I just don’t think you get the same respect for a book with ebooks.

  2. Dog-eared pages bother me, along with broken spines. It’s so easy to find something to use as a bookmark, there’s no need to vandalize the book! 🙂
